A living tree: how TOTOKO tables are born
There is something very special about natural wood – something that cannot be faked or repeated. It preserves the rhythm of nature, the power of time and the silence of the forest. In every knot, in every bend of the fibers – there is a story that we do not hide, but on the contrary – respectfully reveal in every TOTOKO table.
We work exclusively with solid oak – a strong, deep, natural material that grows slowly in ecologically clean regions of Western Poland. This wood has an exceptional density and endurance, which only gain nobility over the years. However, before the wood becomes a table, it goes through a complex and careful processing process. Immediately after harvesting, we send it to automated drying chambers, where the humidity gradually decreases to the optimal 10%. This process is not a technical formality, but a real stage of transformation. It allows you to avoid deformations, protects against fungi and ensures stability in the future product. Properly dried wood already then becomes a reliable basis for durability.
After drying, each board is sawn by hand – this allows you to remove the internal stress that arose during the growth of the tree. Our carpenters are not just masters, they know how to “read” wood, determine its strengths, and choose those parts that will emphasize the beauty of the finished table. When assembly begins, details become important. The tabletop is not created on a machine – it is assembled by hand, board by board, selecting the grain pattern, colors, and rhythm. We do not remove knots – we leave them as authentic accents. A small crack? It does not make the table worse, on the contrary – it adds individuality to it.
The table surface goes through several stages of sanding to become smooth, almost silky to the touch. The final stage is varnishing. We choose durable, environmentally friendly varnishes that protect the surface from daily use, preserving the natural texture of the wood. The varnish does not cover the nature of the material – it only helps to preserve it.
Even after the work is completed, the tree does not stop. It continues to “live”: it may change color slightly under the influence of the sun, react to fluctuations in temperature or humidity. This is natural, and we do not fight it – we accept this variability as part of the nature of the tree. That is why slight variations in size or shade are not a defect, but evidence of the authenticity of the material.
For wood to feel good in your home, it is important to maintain a soft, stable microclimate – with a temperature of 18–23°C and humidity within 40–65%. In such conditions, the tree breathes evenly, calmly, maintaining its shape and strength for decades.
